Our Story

Ribbon Cutting.jpeg

Our story began with a dream, a set of deeply held values, and a whole lot of dedication. Our dream to create a sustainable addition and libacious tribute to these beautiful Highlands finally came true with the opening of Haliburton Highlands Brewing in 2014 @ Abbey Gardens.

Since 2014, we have grown and developed our space. Sharing our love of local artists, producers and musicians with the greater Haliburton community.

Michael

Head Brewer

Michael Schiedel-Webb is a man of many talents.  Educated in Hotel and Restaurant Management at George Brown College, Michael developed back of house and front of house experience in restaurants and hotel dining rooms.  Coming to his senses, Michael transitioned to become a professional dad and enabler of many snowboarding, long-boarding, mountain biking and sport climbing adventures for his two boys.  When Jewelle was tired of him having all the fun, Michael developed hands on experience in brewery production through internships at Rahr & Sons Brewing in Fort Worth, Texas and Shades of Pale in Park City, Utah and completed the Brewing Technology program at the Siebel Institute and World Brewing Academy in Chicago.

Jewelle

SWMBO

Michael likes to say that starting Haliburton Highlands Brewing was Jewelle’s fault.  After spending more than 20 years in the computer systems and semi-conductor industries working in positions in Sales & Operations Planning, Manufacturing Strategy, Product Marketing and leading business transformation and change management efforts, Jewelle finally came to her senses and decided that she would start HHB so that she can indulge in her passion for the local food movement and work, live and play in the Highlands every day!

Keanan

Brewer

Keanan is a man of few words, with a dry wit and a sensitive palate.  He is the creator of several HHB seasonal including the Belgian Rye Porter, Winter Warmer and Event Horizon Barley Wine.  Keanan earned his Master Brewer Certification with Versuchs- und Lehranstalt für Brauerei in Berlin (VLB). Enough said.

Sandra

Brewer

When Sandra first came into the brewery in the fall of 2014 to inquire if we might be looking for some summer help the following year, we were impressed by her enthusiasm and home brewing experience.  She has been an awesome addition to the team!  If Charles Schultz were to depict Sandra as a Peanuts character, she would be drawn with a helium sunshine balloon always hovering over her head.  Sandra is (almost) always smiling (she is human after all) and infuses the brewery with her positive energy.  In addition to brewing Sandra is responsible for yeast management at HHB – putting her Biology major to good use!  Sandra earned her Master Brewer Certification with Versuchs- und Lehranstalt für Brauerei in Berlin (VLB).

Ringo

Brewery Dog (retired, but makes occasional appearances - particularly on treat night AKA Bingo night).

Ringo is our much loved West Highland White Terrier.  Being otherwise starved for attention (right…) he often joins us at the brewery to hang out with the team, snag some spent grain when no one is looking and share his extreme cuteness with one and all.  Ringo has acquired a significant fan base over the past few seasons with some customers (and their dogs) expressing their sincere disappointment when he is not in the house to greet them when they arrive. If Ringo is an important part of your brewery experience, please let us know and we will do what we can to align his schedule!
